A group of United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmakers has vowed to back the removal of Trade Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria over the contentious importation of maize.
Members of Parliament threatened to remove the CS from office if maize was imported into the country. The MPs, led by Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei, questioned the legality of importing maize without cabinet approval.
They also stated that the move should be reversed because farmers are about to harvest.
It has never happened before that maize has been imported into the country during harvest season, despite the fact that we understand that local production is usually our first option,” they stated.
The visibly enraged legislators demanded to know why ships were docking at Mombasa Port without the proper legal procedures in place.
Furthermore, the MPs stated that Kuria’s action would undermine the intention of ensuring minimum returns to farmers.
The MPs also stated that despite the high cost of farm inputs during the planting season, the harvest is expected to be 42 million bags.
Mosop MP Abraham Kirwa Bitok, Pokot South MP David Pkosing, and Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa were among those present at the press conference.
On the evening of Monday, November 21, political analyst Herman Manyora called for Kuria’s resignation.
Manyora appealed to President William Ruto via his YouTube channel to remove Kuria from office following his previous remarks on genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
“Why can’t Ruto just listen to me for a day? Consider the people he has appointed to positions of power. Take a look at what Moses Kuria was saying the other day. In which country can a minister say that and then resign? Kuria, please remove yourself from the seat. He is a friend of mine, but I let him go. I trust him, but the problem is his mouth; I thought he’d change,” Manyora said.
He went on to say that Ruto was let down by the ministers he chose to work with.
