Safaricom will introduce a point blocking client contact details when making payments through Lipa na M- Pesa to check particular information being traded to advertisers or fraudsters.

The telco will only display the first and last many integers of a phone number, blocking the middle and effectively hiding the contact of the client.

This is a kin to the model banks use when transferring account figures to avoid telling details of their guests.

At present, people paying for goods and services leave their figures and names with thousands of merchandisers. With the phone figures and buying habits, the merchandisers use the particular information to shoot unasked advertising through textbook dispatches.

The information can also be vended to third parties without concurrence in sand of the data protection law passed in 2019 to cover sequestration. Safaricom is keen to limit the use of particular information attained from Lipa na M- Pesa deals by third parties.

A superintendent at safaricom said that the aim is to hide the number where it’ll display say the first two or three figures and the last bones and block out the middle, just the way banks do.

Safaricom move to check use of guests ’ data by third parties comes amid exposures that further than a fifth of Kenyan companies participated guests ’ fiscal and particular information without concurrence.

A check by consultancy Ernst & Young( EY) shows that 41 percent of enterprises transferred their guests ’ data to third- party service providers. Further than half or 53 percent of these companies or 21.7 percent of enterprises captured in the EY check didn’t seek the blessing of their guests.

This violates the law that restricts the running and sharing of particular data enterprises and government realities gain. Individualities in breach threat a maximum forfeiture of Sh3 million or 10 times in jail, while enterprises risk a forfeiture of over to Sh5 million or one percent of periodic development.

The particular information was substantially participated for analysis, processing deals, transferring SMS cautions or to advertisers. Some enterprises passed customer data to mates in business, while others gave information to law enforcement officers for examinations.

The EY check said there were also cases of dealing the data to merchandisers. participating of customer information to third parties has led to limited textbook dispatches, unasked emails or announcements of services and products like insurance programs.

Individualities also risk having their individualities reproduced, exposing guests to fiscal fraud. Data has been described as the “ new oil painting ” and brokers play a huge part in rooting value from particular information in all its forms.

They collect it from hundreds of sources, including tale information, checks, public records and fidelity card programmes. They also vend the data to other organisations.

Kenya ranks third among countries that admit the most spam dispatches comprising 102 per month per subscriber, according to data from Truecaller, the Stockholm- grounded frequenter identification app.

Trafficker payments through M- Pesa have grown, especially during Covid- 19 as consumers decreasingly make cashless deals to avoid contracting the largely contagious coronavirus.

Lipa na M- Pesa was launched in June 2013 and has aggressively signed merchandisers across the country, including large and small businesses. This has seen it catch the card payments – run by banks and their global payments technology mates similar as Visa and Mastercard — that have largely concentrated on serving formal retailers.

Active Lipa na M- Pesa trafficker tills surged 76.8 percent to 597 in the time to March. For merchandisers, use of cashless payments has the benefit of reducing profit leakages besides barring the pitfalls and costs of handling notes and coins.

Cashless payments are anticipated to grow in the coming times, incompletely due to increased digitisation and lowering of freights by payment service providers. Kenya still relies heavily on hard cash through which further than 90 percent of deals are settled.

Lipa na M- Pesa is part of the expansion of the mobile plutocrat platform into an ecosystem immolation payments, cash transfers, credit, insurance, savings and investment services.
