In the Kenyan history, Musalia Mudavadi is the first Deputy prime minister while Uhuru Kenyatta is the 2nd Deputy Prime minister. None of the two Deputy prime ministers has a ministerial portfolios.
Mudavadi has worked with the honorable Raila Amollo Odinga in the ODM party, but every trial he made to be the party leader yielded no fruits. For instance, before the 2013 general elections, He sought for the Nomination of ODM to be its presidential candidate all in vain. Some challenges including lack of political freedom and instilling of illegal political mechanisms that bar other leaders from free and fair nominations made him decamp from the party for the United Democratic Party, from mount Kenya. He was nominated as it’s flag bearer emerging third in the 2013 presidential race.
With ODM party, Mudavadi hints that the party leader always has a direct nomination to be the flag bearer. This means that anybody else who wants the nomination is kept off. According to him, the ODM leader is selfish and therefore he’s unable to work under him any longer. He proceeded to join the Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto’s Jubilee coalition that brought together UDF, URP and TNA parties.
However, he left the coalition after a breach of contract which had stated that Uhuru Kenyatta would step down in his favour as the presidential flagbearer for the URP/UDF/TNA coalition. This breach of agreement was brought about by the fierce objection by Uhuru’s supporters who insisted that he must be the coalition’s presidential aspirant.
In 2015, Musalia Mudavadi formed Amani National Congress (ANC) while eyeing the presidential race come 2017. He further formed the opposition National super alliance (NASA) within which he’s a core principal.
When results came out after the 2017 elections, the NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga decided to swear himself. Musalia did not attend the mock swearing-in terming it unconstitutional.
Raila has served as the opposition leader for quit some time now. On 9 March 2018,he had a handshake with President Uhuru Kenyatta. Mudavadi switched in to be the opposition figure in Kenyan politics and more vocal talking about Kenyans’ economy and huge public debt, alongside his interest to popularize the need for a presidential candidate this year 2022.
In the third month of 2021 Mudavadi with the Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula and Kanu chairman Gideon Moi formed One Kenya Allliance.
On the 23rd day of January the following year, Musalia accepted the presidential candidature under the ANC party and promised to work with his excellency deputy president William Samoei Ruto. He regarded the move as an earthquake telling the Nation that the time to be deceived is far gone. He called upon Kenyans to rise up and save the country from looming danger ahead of them.
In an interview with KBC, he said that they realised they were not reading from the same script as Odinga.
According to him, Raila kept on making important decisions by himself, including the handshake without any involvement of his coalition partners. Musalia insists that politics is all about trust.
He further hinted that this move greatly influenced his decision to ditch the man he has supported twice for the presidency, and hence forming an alliance with the “hustler” Ruto.
Musalia now agrees that the Raila of today is not the person he new before. “Things are different, Raila is never the same again,” he said.
